چکیده

The Precambrian geological record shows peak of activity at 1.1, 1.9–2.1, 2.7 and 3.5 Ga, often associated with massive crustal production, orogenesis and supercontinent cycles. It has been suggested that these bursts of tectonic activity are due to mantle avalanche events, where accumulating subducted slabs periodically penetrate the 670 km discontinuity, and subsequent upwelling counterflow and plume activity results in massive volcanism. Here we present paleomagnetic evidence for periods of rapid plate motions coinciding with the observed peaks in crustal age distribution. We present a new model for plate-driven episodic tectonics in the Precambrian, where higher mantle temperatures result in lower lithospheric stresses, causing rapid pulses of subduction interspersed with periods of relative quiescence. Plate-driven episodicity will naturally arise for hotter mantle temperatures of the early Earth and can explain rapid pulses of plate motion and crustal production without the need to invoke mantle avalanche events. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Subduction styles in the Precambrian: Insight from numerical experiments

a r t i c l e i n f o Plate tectonics is a self-organizing global system driven by the negative buoyancy of the thermal boundary layer resulting in subduction. Although the signature of plate tectonics is recognized with some confidence in the Phanerozoic geological record of the continents, evidence for plate tectonics becomes less certain further back in time. To improve our understanding of ...

Regional controls on magma ascent and storage in volcanic arcs

Understanding the controls for magma ascent and storage depth is important for volcanic hazard assessment. Regional differences in the depths of magma storage between volcanic arcs suggest that the settings of subduction zones and of overriding plates influence howmagma ascends through the crust. Here we use a compilation of data for 70 volcanoes in 15 volcanic regions to better understand the ...

The teleseismic signature of fossil subduction: Northwestern Canada

[1] Between June 2003 and September 2005, 20 broadband, three-component seismometers were deployed along the MacKenzie-Liard Highway in Canada’s Northwest Territories as part of the joint Lithoprobe-IRIS Canada Northwest Experiment (CANOE). These stations traverse a paleo-Proterozoic suture and subduction zone that has been previously documented to mantle depths using seismic reflection profili...

Geodynamic Regimes and Tectonic Settings for Metamorphism: Relationship to the Supercontinent Cycle

Metamorphism associated with orogenesis provides a mineral record that may be inverted to yield ambient apparent thermal gradients. On modern Earth, tectonic settings with lower thermal gradients are characteristic of subduction zones whereas those with higher thermal gradients are characteristic of backarcs and orogenic hinterlands. The duality of thermal environments reflects the asymmetry of...

Episodic tremor and slip on the Cascadia subduction zone: the chatter of silent slip.

We found that repeated slow slip events observed on the deeper interface of the northern Cascadia subduction zone, which were at first thought to be silent, have unique nonearthquake seismic signatures. Tremorlike seismic signals were found to correlate temporally and spatially with slip events identified from crustal motion data spanning the past 6 years. During the period between slips, tremo...
